Matching material to the application
Each pipe material has a job it is good at. Copper handles heat and pressure and is easy to inspect but costs more and attracts theft. HDPE is tough, flexible and ideal for buried reticulation. uPVC is economical for cold water and drainage but is not suitable for hot lines. PPR handles hot water well when heat-fused correctly.
The most common specification error is using a cold-water material on a hot line. It survives commissioning, then fails months later when the geyser thermostat runs at its upper limit — inside a wall or slab, where the repair costs many times the original saving.
Below ground, movement and point loading matter more than pressure. A flexible material that tolerates ground movement usually outperforms a rigid one that is theoretically stronger but cracks at a bedding fault.
Pressure class: the number that must not be guessed
Pressure class is the working pressure the pipe is rated for, with a safety margin. It is chosen from the system working pressure, not from what is on the shelf, and municipal supply pressure varies widely across South African networks.
Static pressure at the lowest point of a tall building is not the same as pressure at the meter. On multi-storey work the class is calculated per zone, and pressure-reducing valves are part of the design, not an afterthought.
Surge and water hammer push transient pressure well above the working figure. Systems with fast-closing valves or pumps need that allowance built in, or the pipe spends its life absorbing shocks it was never rated for.
Jointing methods and why mixing them fails
The jointing method has to suit both the material and the installer. Compression fittings are quick and serviceable. Solvent weld is cheap and permanent when surfaces are clean and dry. Heat fusion produces the strongest joint in PPR and HDPE but needs the right tool and operator.
Fittings are quoted separately from pipe for a reason: the system must match the jointing method the installer is equipped for. A keen pipe price with mismatched fittings is not a saving.
Mixing metals across a joint sets up galvanic corrosion. Copper hard against galvanised steel will corrode at the junction; where dissimilar metals must meet, a dielectric union belongs in the specification.
Buried, exposed and in-slab runs
Buried pipe needs correct bedding and backfill. Most buried failures trace to a stone against the pipe wall or poor compaction, not to the pipe itself.
Exposed runs need UV stability. Many materials degrade under direct South African sun within a few seasons unless UV-stabilised or shielded, and inland highveld exposure is harsher than the figures suggest.
In-slab pipework should be sleeved and pressure-tested before the pour. Testing after the concrete has cured converts a five-minute fix into demolition.
What actually drives the price you are quoted
Polymer and copper prices set the floor, but the delivered number is mostly local: stockholding, transport, fitting range and merchant margin.
Coil versus length changes both price and installed cost. Long coils cut joint counts on reticulation runs, and every joint removed is a leak path removed.
Consolidating pipe, fittings and valves onto one order almost always beats splitting across suppliers to chase line prices, because delivery and site time cost more than the difference.
Compliance, testing and handover
Potable water pipe must be approved for drinking water. This is not a formality — non-potable material in a drinking line is a health issue and a failed inspection.
Pressure test before closing up, and record it. A signed test result is the difference between a warranty conversation and an argument.
Keep batch and certification documentation with the project file. If a run is questioned years later, traceability decides who carries the cost.
